The genus name 'Centaurea' comes from the Centaurus family of half-man half-horse creatures that appear in Greek mythology. Legends tell of Chiron—a wise man of one such clan said to use this plants to treat wounds. The gold part is the involucres, preserved here as an eternal bud.
